How to Catch Sheepshead in Winter (Best Baits & Easy Techniques)

When you finish reading this post, you’ll know exactly how to catch Sheepshead with the best baits — most of which are completely free. Winter is here and the Sheepshead are moving into the intracoastal waterways, bays, inlets, bridges, and backwater areas.

To target them consistently, you need to know which baits work best: fiddler crabs, mud crabs, barnacles, sandfleas, and shrimp. The tips below will help you catch Sheepshead from shore, jetties, bridges, kayaks, boats, and even while wade fishing.

Gear for Sheepshead Fishing

  • Reels: 1000–4000 size spinning reels
  • Line: 10–20 lb braid
  • Rod: 6–7 ft medium power
  • Leader: 15–20 lb fluorocarbon
  • Hooks: #4 to #1
  • Rigs: Many options work — experiment to see what fits your style

Best Baits for Sheepshead (Ranked)

1. Fiddler Crabs

Where to find: Near mangroves or sandy shorelines during warm parts of the day. Rarely in shops—call ahead.

How to catch: Move fast. Use a stick or small shovel if they run into holes.

How to hook: Insert hook where the back leg attaches and push through the shell.

2. Mud Crabs

Where to find: Under rocks at low tide.

Important: Do NOT keep crabs with striped legs — these are protected Stone Crabs.

How to hook: Break off one claw and feed the hook through the body.

3. Barnacles

Where to find: Bridge pilings, docks, markers, jetties.

How to collect: Scrape them into a small-mesh net.

How to hook: Insert the hook through the flat backside and exit through the front.

4. Sandfleas

Where to find: Use a sandflea rake along the beach where waves wash in and out.

How to hook: Use a #2 hook anywhere on the pointed or rounded end.

5. Shrimp

Live shrimp work best.

How to prepare & hook: Break off the tail. Hook from in front of the legs and exit through the top of the head. Use leftover meat as chum.

Bait Care Tip

Fiddler crabs, mud crabs, and sandfleas should be rinsed with saltwater occasionally to keep them alive. Keep them in a dry bucket and rinse with saltwater periodically.
